Agree with Christian that the D is not working at the moment. I am a bit fuzzy on his suggestion, but my interpretation is that if the left side stem turned into a vertical instead of curving inwards…1 -

I think “subset to only the glyphs used in the document” would be the obvious meaning. This would not play very well with editable embedding.2
